The literature review is devoted to the problem of diabetes mellitus (DM) in obstetrics as the most common metabolic disease that affects vital organs and body systems, affecting all age and social groups. The growing number of patients with DM leads to an increase in the number of pregnant women with a complicated obstetric history, which affects the course and outcome of gestation. The study of the mechanism of development and course of DM in pregnant women, which is based on a combination of physiological changes — metabolic and hormonal, characteristic for the gestational period, and pathological processes — diabetic disorders, can help diagnose early the disease and exclude the development of a number of complications in both mother and fetus.
