INSTRUCTIONS FOR AUTHORS
Dear Colleagues, the Editorial Board of the journal asks you to be so kind as to adhere to the following guidelines:
1. EDITORIAL ETHICS AND CONFLICT OF INTERESTS Submitted manuscripts should be signed by the head of the host organization. An official referral should also be provided (download a blank form of the referral), specifying if the article is a part of the author's thesis. Manuscripts are to be signed by all authors. One cannot submit a paper previously accepted or published elsewhere. Authors are responsible for disclosing financial or other potential conflict of interests that might bias or be seen to bias their work. The authors are required to indicate the role of sponsors or funders in each of the following: study design, collection and analysis of data, and making the decision to publish the results. If neither the sponsor, nor the funder played such a role, this should be stated in the referral (see above). Informed consent It is prohibited to publish patient-identifiable information, i.e. his/her name, initials, or case number on photographs or in illness descriptions and family trees, except for the cases of paramount scientific interest and an informed consent given by the patient or his (her) parents or guardians. Obtaining the informed consent should be stated in the article. Human rights and animal rights For experiments involving human subjects the authors should specify whether they conform to the local or regional ethical standards as well as to the ethical standards accepted by the 1975 Helsinki Declaration and also the 2000 revised version. For experiments involving laboratory animals the authors should specify whether they conform to the husbandry conditions accepted by the host organization, recommendations of the national research council, and national legislation.
The author is responsible for the accuracy of bibliographic data.
2. The editors retain the customary right to shorten and alter submitted manuscripts. A manuscript is considered registered on the date its final variant (revised in accordance with the recommendations of the Editorial Staff or the reviewer) is received.
3. No publication fee is charged.
4. The article should be typed in a 14 pitch-font, 1.5-spaced, not exceeding 30 lines per page. The top, left, and bottom margins should be at least 20 mm and the right margin should be at least 10 min.
The title page should give first the author’s initials and surname and the paper’s title. The new line should indicate the official name of the institution and agency where the work has been done; the surname of the director of the institution, the head of the department, city, etc. The full official name of the institution and agency must be given in Russian and English. We recommend to check the correct spelling of the institution's name on the site https://grid.ac. At the end of the article, all authors give their surname, name, patronymic, academic degree and title, affiliation, position, complete working address with six-digit postal code, telephone number, e-mail address, ORCID. If there is no ORCID number, you need to obtain it by registering at https://orcid.org/.Each author must sign the article. The collective article must be signed by all authors.
5. Articles describing original investigations should not exceed 10 pages (1 page contains 1800 character with spaces); reviews of literature and articles under the headings “Guidelines for the Practitioner” and “Postgraduate Education” should be not more than 15 pages. Original articles should be presented in accordance with the following headings: Objective, Materials/Subjects and Methods, Results, Discussion, and Conclusions.
6. Illustrations: black-and-white photographs and figures should be given in the text of an article, and attached on a paper carrier to the article in two copies. Each figure must have its number, the surname of the author, and the title of the article and an indication of the top and bottom on its back (with a soft regular lead pencil).
Captions for figures and photos, notes must be in Russian and English.Figure captions with all designations should be provided on a separate sheet.
7. Both tables and figures should be given in the text of an article and also separately at its end in 2 copies. Signatures and all text data must be sent in Russian and English!
Units of measurements in the tables, International System (SI) of Units need be carefully checked by the author and correspond to those in the text.
8. Medicaments given in the articles (with the exception of promotional one) must have international nonproprietary names and their dosages be carefully checked by the author.
9. Abbreviations of words and names (not more than 3), except for common abbreviations of measures, physical and mathematical quantities and terms, are allowed only with the initial indication of the full name. Narrowly specialized terms should be deciphered. It is not recommended to use abbreviations in the title of the article.
10. All original articles must have a structured Russian and English abstract of 100 to 250 words with the title of the article, the initials and surname of the author, including the headings: Objective, Materials/Subjects and Methods, Results, Discussion, and Conclusions, which must briefly describe the content of the study. An annotation should be applied to survey and learning articles. The abstract or the annotation must provide at least 3 key words at the end.
11. The article should be attached by a list of references given alphabetically by authors’ surname, typed 1.5-spaced on a separate page of a sheet. The list first includes references to Russian and then foreign publications in the past 7-10 years. The bibliographic description of each reference should be carefully checked by the author.
It is desirable that original articles should cite not more than 15 references; reviews of literature should have not more than 50 references. The authors mentioned in the article must be necessarily given with their surnames and initials; the surnames of foreign authors be given in their original transcription.
Bibliographic references must be numbered and given in square brackets in the text of the manuscript in the strict correspondence with the numbers of the list of references. Abstracts of dissertations, other than dissertations themselves, may be referenced.
The list of references should be compiled as follows:
If a monograph is written by several authors, all the authors’ surnames are followed by initials, title of article, the place (city, publisher) and year of publication, and pages.
Example:
25. Abramchenko V.V., Kiselev A.G., Orlova O.O. Management of high-risk pregnancy and labor. Moscow: MIA 2004; 400.
If an article has been prepared by a group of authors (i.e. “Edited”), its bibliographic description in the list of references is given as follows:
10. Obstetrics: National guidelines. Edited by A.K. Ailamazyan, V.I. Kulakov, V.E. Radzinsky, G.M. Savelyeva. – Moscow: GEOTAR-Media 2007; 1200.
In foreign authors’ monographs published in Russian, the name of a book should be also followed by an indication of what language it is translated from. Example:
15. Oakley C., Warnes C.A. Heart disease in pregnancy. Translated from English. Moscow: BINOM 2010; 368.
The bibliographic description of an article from a journal or collection of works should be compiled in the following order: the surnames and initials of all authors, necessarily the title of article, the name of journal or collection of works (the place for the collection) and year of publication, the volume and number of journal, and pages. Examples:
10. Ivanov I.P., Petrova A.S., Golubeva E.A., Sidorov I.V., Kalashnikov V.P., Veselova A.S. The principles and stages of rehabilitation therapy after gynecological surgery. – Akush. i Gin. 2006, 7: 24-27.
11. Eddy J.J., Gideonsen M.D., Song J.J., Grobman W.A., O`Halloran P. Pancreatitis in pregnancy. Obstet Gynec 2008; 112: 5: 1075—1081.
The editorial staff convincingly asks to strictly observe the punctuation rules given in the examples and not to put extra marks, such as points, commas, etc. when preparing a list of references.
Please pay attention! The only correct form of doi-link: https://doi.org/10.5468/ogs.2016.59.1.1 Do not use «doi:», «dx.doi.org», etc. Within the link only hyphen is used. There is no dot after doi and URL!
12. Authors are responsible for the content of their article and the accuracy of tables, figures, and a list of references.
The editorial staff reserves the right to abridge and modify the obtained materials and to adapt them to the headings of the journal.
Manuscripts of original articles should follow the guidelines posted on the EQUATOR Network resource (https://www.equator-network.org/) for describing and presenting the results of studies depending on their design:
- STROBE - for observational studies;
- STARD - for accuracy studies of diagnostic and screening tests;
- TRIPOD - for predictive models;
- CONSORT - for randomized controlled trials;
- and others.
The authors undertake to provide the editorial office with the data for reanalysis if the reviewer has doubts about the correctness of the performed statistical analysis.
The section “Introduction” should contain the following information:
- Justification of the relevance of the study with references to the literature.
- Clearly formulated purpose of the study.
The section “Materials and Methods” should contain the following information:
- A detailed description of the study design in a form that allows the results to be reproduced using only the text of the article:
- The techniques, equipment, medicines, etc. used, as well as the ways in which they are used (e.g. for medicines, the dosage, duration, frequency and other features of the treatment regimen should be specified). Therapeutic and diagnostic interventions that are not used in routine practice but are used for the benefit of the study should be clearly identified.
- For randomized controlled trials - description of the method of randomization and the method of concealment of the randomization sequence, as well as “blinding” of patients, health care providers and persons assessing the effect of the intervention (if conducted).
- Description of statistical analysis methods:
The “Results” section should contain the following information:
- Tables, graphs, diagrams and text description to them containing references to the corresponding objects. The article should not contain objects that are not referenced in the text. Duplication in the text of numerical values presented in tables, graphs and diagrams is strictly not recommended.
- The number of observations for each trait described for each group in each table and figure. Tables and figures (or their titles) should indicate which descriptive statistics are presented in them.
- When investigating the efficacy of diagnostic methods, provide results in the form of sensitivity, specificity, predictive value of positive and negative results with calculation of their 95% confidence intervals. The conjugation tables, the number of true-positive, false-positive, true-negative, false-negative results are obligatory.
- In a study of the effectiveness of a medical intervention (treatment, prevention or rehabilitation), provide the results of a comparison of the main and control groups, both before and after the intervention. For prospective studies, the relative risk and absolute risk differences and their 95% confidence intervals, and for retrospective studies, the odds ratio and its 95% confidence interval.
- Do not rely solely on statistical hypothesis testing (e.g., determination of P values), as this does not reflect important information about the magnitude of the observed effect and the precision of the estimate. Presenting the results as an effect size makes the result of a statistical test more clinically meaningful than giving P values alone.
The Discussion section should contain the following information:
- Comparison of the obtained results with other studies.
- Practical significance of the findings.
- Limitations of the study.
The Conclusion section should contain the following information:
- A brief enumeration of the main findings of the study, without discussing them.
When preparing the manuscript, the order of presentation presented in the PRISMA template should be followed.
The Introduction section should contain the following information:
- Rationale for the study: a description of the relevance of the topic and the need for a systematic review or meta-analysis.
- Purpose: a clearly stated aim of the study.
The Materials and Methods section should contain the following information:
- Inclusion and exclusion criteria for studies: criteria should be described using the “PICO” scheme (population (population, intervention, comparator if available, outcomes of interest, and other criteria if available (e.g. study design).
- Information search process: databases searched for studies (PubMed, eLibrary, Cochrane Library, etc.) and other sources, dates searched, search strategy (using keywords and/or filters used), number of researchers searched.
- Process of study selection: the process of study selection, the number of researchers involved in the selection, and how their disagreements were resolved should be described.
- Assessment of methodological quality of included studies: the tools used to assess the methodological quality of included studies that are appropriate to their design should be listed.
- Data analysis (meta-analysis only): methods of statistical analysis should be described, including the meta-analysis models used and their selection criteria, assessment of heterogeneity, sensitivity analysis, and methods for assessing publication bias.
The “Results” section should contain the following information:
- Results of search and selection of studies: number of studies found, number of included and excluded studies with a brief indication of the reason for exclusion. It is optimal to present a flow chart of the study selection process according to the PRISMA template and its brief text description.
- Summary of included studies: table with characteristics of included studies (author, year, study design, sample, intervention, main results, assessment of methodological quality) and textual description of included studies.
- Publication bias assessment (meta-analysis only): in text and/or graphical form with interpretation of the results of the publication bias assessment.
- Meta-analysis results (for meta-analysis only): graphical presentation of the results of meta-analysis, as well as interpretation of the results.
The Discussion section should contain the following information:
- Limitations of the study: description of the limitations of the conducted study and their impact on the results (e.g., features of methodological quality or small samples of included studies, impact of publication bias, etc.).
- Comparison with the results of similar studies.
- Assessment of the clinical significance of the results obtained.
The Conclusion section should contain the following information:
- A brief listing of the main results of the study, without discussing them.
The Editorial Board of the journal complies with the ethical standards approved by the international scientific community. The Editorial Board uses the Recommendations for the Conduct, Reporting, Editing and Publication of Scholarly Work in Medical Journals of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors and recommendations of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).
The Editorial Board is responsible for making decisions which of the submitted manuscripts will be accepted for publication. The Editorial Board makes the decision regarding a publication based on the journal’s policy, taking into account the current authors’ rights legislation and avoiding defamation and plagiarism. The editorial evaluation of the manuscript is independent of race, ethnicity and gender, religion, citizenship, or political views of the authors. Decision whether to publish an article or not is based exclusively on its scientific relevance, originality, clarity of presentation, and correspondence of the topic to journal’s specialization.
All the Editorial Board members are responsible for disclosing any information about the submitted manuscript to individuals other than authors, peer reviewers, potential peer reviewers, or publishers.
The unpublished materials disclosed in the submitted manuscript cannot be used by the Editorial Board members for their own research without written permission from the authors.
In case of an ethical complaint or a conflict situation regarding the manuscript or the published article, the Editorial Board should undertake reasonable countermeasures, together with the publisher, to restore the violated rights. If errors are revealed, the Editorial Board should assist in publishing corrections or refutations. Each reported case of unethical behavior will be considered, even if submitted several years after the article had been published.
The editorial board is guided by the following policy regarding the retraction of publications (download .pdf).
The review process is aimed at facilitating the Editorial Board in editorial decision-making and may also help the author to improve the manuscript.
If a reviewer selected by the Editorial Board does not feel competent for reviewing the manuscript or feels that it is not possible to meet the deadline of the review, he/she should promptly notify the Editorial Board and decline to perform the review.
Any material under review should be regarded as confidential. The material should not be shared or discussed with anyone outside the review process unless approved by the editor.
Reviewing should be objective. Subjective critique of the author is not allowed. Reviewer’s opinion should be stated clearly and supported by arguments.
The reviewer is responsible for determining the cases when the relevant publications have not been cited in the manuscript or listed in the References section. Furthermore, the reviewer should determine whether all the statements, conclusions, and ideas borrowed from other publications had the corresponding references. If the reviewer detects that the manuscript under review significantly coincides with or is similar to another known publication, he/she should notify the Editorial Board.
Non-disclosable information and ideas must be regarded as confidential and cannot be used for one’s personal advantage. Experts should not review manuscripts if they have any possible conflict of interest due to competitive, collaborative, or other relationships with the manuscript authors, as well as companies or institutions related to the manuscript.
If the manuscript is based on an original study, the authors must submit the reliable results of their work and an objective discussion of significance of the study. The manuscript should contain all the key data, accurate description of the study details and references in order to ensure reproducibility of the results. Data falsification or the intentionally invalid statements in the manuscript are regarded as unethical and are inappropriate.
The Editorial Board can request the authors to submit raw data in addition to the manuscript. The author must be ready to provide public access to these data, provided that public access to the data violates neither confidentiality of the research participants nor rights of an individual or a company owning these data.
Authors must submit only original studies. Authors must properly and accurately acknowledge the work of others. Publications that had significantly contributed to preparing the study or underlied its design should also be acknowledged.
In general, materials describing the contents of the same study should not be published in more than one journal. Submitting the manuscript to more than one journal is considered unethical and inappropriate. Copyrighted materials that have already been published cannot be submitted to the journal. Furthermore, materials under consideration by the Editorial Board must not be submitted to be published elsewhere. When submitting an article, the author must inform the editor about all the previous presentations of the study that can be regarded as a duplicate publication. The author must notify the editor if the manuscript contains the information published by the author in previous reports or submitted for publication elsewhere. In this case, the new article should contain references to the previously published material.
Authorship is limited to the individuals that have made a significant contribution to 1) conception and design of the study; data acquisition and interpretation; 2) preparing the first draft of the article or editing the article to improve its quality; and 3) final approval of the manuscript for publication. Each author must participate in the study to an extent sufficient to take public responsibility for the corresponding part of the content of his/her article. Involvement consisting in funding or selecting material for the article is not sufficient reason for inclusion in the list of authors. General guidance of the research group is not sufficient for including in the list of authors.
All the authors must approve the final manuscript and its submission to the journal for publication.
When submitting an article to the journal, all authors must sign the form disclosing financial or any other substantive conflict of interest that can be considered to have influenced the study results or their interpretation. All funding sources of the submitted studies must be specified.
After the peer review process, the article can be sent to the author for improvement. Authors should be actively involved in the review process: promptly answer the questions and, if necessary, correct the manuscript in accordance with the reviewer’s comments.

All the manuscripts submitted for publication in the journal are peer reviewed (single-blind peer review).
The journal provides peer reviewing of all the submitted materials that are within the remit of the journal for expert evaluation. All peer reviewers are the acknowledged experts who specialize in the field relevant to the reviewed materials and have had publications relevant to the topic of the article being reviewed over the past 3 years. The peer reviews are stored in the publishing and editorial office for 5 years.
Reviewers treat the article as confidential material and strictly follow the author’s right for non-disclosure of the data reported in the manuscript before the article is published. The reviewer may engage additional experts only with permission from the Editorial Board and on a confidential basis.
Reviewers’ comments are sent to the author without disclosing the reviewers’ identity. The Editorial Board makes a final decision whether to publish the manuscript or not after the peer reviews and authors’ answers were received. The Editorial Board sends copies of peer reviews or a substantiated rejection to the authors and also sends copies of the peer reviews to the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation if a request has been received by the Editorial Board.
In some cases, the Editorial Board can send the article for an additional peer review, including statistical and methodological reviewing.
If the author and the reviewer have unresolvable contradictions regarding the manuscript, the Editorial Board has the right to send the manuscript to another reviewer for review.
The Editorial Board conducts no more than three rounds of review for each manuscript. If the reviewers or the Editorial Board have significant comments after three times revision of the manuscript, the manuscript is rejected. In this case, the authors are notified accordingly.
The Editorial Board constantly monitors the quality of peer review using the Russian version of the Review Quality Instrument questionnaire (Version 3.2), van Rooyen S., Black N., Godlee F. J Clin Epidemiol 1999;52:625-9.
The English version of the Review Quality Instrument questionnaire is available here (download – PDF file).
