OBJECTIVE

To make a comparative assessment of the lipid profile, glucose and C-peptide content in the population of Aldan and Tommot considering the level of natural radiation exposure.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

The study involved 175 participants, of whom 66 (37.7%) were men and 109 (62.3%) were women. In Aldan, 107 persons were examined, of whom 59 were men and 58 — women. The mean age of men was 44 (33; 52) years and of women — 39 (32; 45) years. In Tommot, 7 men and 51 women were examined, the mean age of men was 62 (41; 64) and of women — 48 (37; 59). The correlation analysis of lipid profile, glucose and C-peptide levels and annual individual effective dose of radiation of the population in radon-affected area of the South Yakutia was conducted.

RESULTS

Close direct correlation with low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (r=0.420; p<0.001) has been revealed, which is confirmed by frequent shift of lipid profile towards atherogenicity in men from Aldan, where the total radiation dosage is 2 times higher than in Tommot. Glucose level is not associated with higher effective dose of radiation, as increased glucose level and reduced C-peptide content were more common in Tommot residents, especially in women (p<0.001).

CONCLUSION

Frequent impairments of lipid metabolism parameters constancy in population living in radon-affected area can contribute to an increase in the incidence of circulatory system diseases and malignant neoplasms. Weak correlations with other parameters of protein and lipid metabolism may be associated with hormesis at low doses of radiation and small sample size.
