Bowen’s disease (BD) is a superficial variant of squamous cell carcinoma of the skin in situ, arising from atypically altered epidermal keratinocytes found only in the thickness of the epidermis during histological examination. Most often, it looks like a slow-growing pink scaly plaque or spot that occurs mainly on the skin of the trunk and proximal extremities, often exposed to ultraviolet radiation. However, in some rarer cases, melanocyte cells producing the pigment melanin can be activated during this process, and the disease, like actinic keratosis, acquires a pigmented form. The clinical features of pigmented BD are not well described. Diagnostics can be rather challenging, as the disease often shares clinical and dermatoscopic features with other pigmented lesions. The authors of the article analyzed the literature on this topic. It provides the latest data on the etiology and pathogenesis of the disease, describes the features of the clinical and dermatoscopic pattern, and presents 2 clinical cases of the pigmented form of BD, subsequently confirmed by histological examination.
