Abstract:

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the effectiveness of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy in patients with lumbar radiculopathy.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

A total of 142 patients with lumbar radiculopathy following intervertebral disc herniation were examined. We compared the effectiveness of platelet-rich plasma injections and standard drug therapy. Pain syndrome was assessed using visual analogue scale (VAS), quality of life — using Oswestry Disability Index (ODI). In addition, recurrence rate and the need for surgical treatment were assessed.

RESULTS

VAS score decreased after PRP therapy by 84%, and quality of life (ODI) improved by 60%. Recurrence rate and the need for surgical treatment were significantly lower in this group.

CONCLUSION

PRP injections are effective regarding pain reduction and quality of life improvement, as well as reduction of recurrence rate and the need for surgical treatment in patients with lumbar radiculopathy in short-term and long-term follow-up.
