Abstract:

Prophylactic treatment of migraine prevents its progression towards chronic headache. To determine the frequency of prophylaxis prescription in real practice, the author analyzed charts of 83 patients with chronic migraine aged 16-70 years (mean 41.4) who referred to the specialized headache center for the first time. Mean duration of migraine was 20 years. All patients overused symptomatic medications, and medication-overuse headache was diagnosed in all cases. Only 27 patients (32%) had previous prophylactic treatment for primary headaches before referral to the specialized center. Importantly, doses and treatment duration did not match with clinical recommendations in most cases.
