OBJECTIVE

To estimate the effectiveness of rhythmic transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) in patients with chronic migraine (CM) and anxiety-depressive disorders.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

There were 50 patients divided into 2 groups: group 1 (n=25) — rTMS, group 2 — placebo-stimulation. Treatment was carried out using the «Neuro-MC» device. The figure-of-eight inductor was located alternately over the left and right hemispheres within dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. In the control group, the coil was placed above dorsolateral prefrontal cortex at 90° to head surface with similar stimulation parameters.

RESULTS

According to headache diaries, there were 19 [18; 21] days with headache before treatment and 14 [12; 17] days (p<0.05) after treatment in the 1^st group. VAS scores were 8 [7; 9] and 6 [4; 8] points (p<0.01), respectively. HIT-6 index was 60 [58; 63] points before treatment in the study group, after treatment — 50 [47; 52] points (p<0.01). BDI score decreased from 18 [15; 23] to 14 [13; 19] points (p<0.001) after rTMS. According to Spielberger-Khanin scale, personal anxiety score was 55.0 [40.0; 63.0] points before treatment; reactive anxiety score was higher (58.0 [41.0; 69.0] points, i.e. high anxiety). These values were 45.0 [31; 54] and 49 [32; 59] points, respectively (p<0.05).

CONCLUSION

Thus, rTMS can be recommended in comprehensive treatment of patients with CM.
