This review presents an interdisciplinary approach to etiology and methods for pain management during changes of sex hormone levels in men and women. The problem of pain does not arouse sufficient interest among endocrinologists who lack the skills for assessing pain neurologically. In most cases, a deficiency of sex hormones remains unnoted in consultations with a neurologist. The authors present the data on the influence of a deficit in the sex hormones testosterone and estrogen on the perception of pain and the frequency of pain syndrome. The link between obesity, the level of sex hormones, and pain, is demonstrated in this article. Special attention is given to male hypogonadism and its influence on pain because the impact of sex hormones in men was less studied compared to that in women. The necessity of research focused on the possibility of using testosterone as an anti-pain treatment method for men with age-related hypogonadism is also considered.
