Abstract:

This review of the results of recent scientific research concerns the issues of prevalence, etiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis of epilepsy, and the principles and treatment of pregnancy and childbirth in women suffering from epilepsy. Epilepsy currently affects about 40 million people worldwide, and the number is steadily increasing. Among patients with epilepsy, there are many women of reproductive age who hope someday to get pregnant. In treating epilepsy, which is a multifactorial disease, there is a need for an informed choice when deciding which antiepileptic drugs to use to prevent seizures and complications, while at the same time reducing the teratogenic effects of the drugs in pregnant women. This article discusses the issues of pregnancy planning, contraception, and precautions for the prevention of congenital malformations. It also discusses the selection of antiepileptic therapy in the context of the teratogenic effects of drugs on the fetus, outlines the principles of childbirth through the natural birth canal, and surgical delivery and analgesia in women suffering from epilepsy.
