The paper presents the specific features of pregnancy and its outcome in 54 women with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM). Before pregnancy, DM was sub- or decompensated in all the patients, 41 received oral glucose-lowering agents before 10 weeks. Gestosis occurred in 20 (37%) patients. Premature delivery was performed in 6 (11.1%) patients, in 4 of them in the interest of their fetus. Twenty-five (46.3%) women gave birth vaginally; the others (53.7%) had a cesarean section. High birth weight babies weighting 4050-4570 g were born to 9 (16.3%) women; 18 (32.7%) newborn infants had signs of diabetic fetopathy. Congenital malformations were noted in one baby. There was a poor perinatal pregnancy outcome (preterm births, severe neonatal status) in 16 (30.9%) patients with type 2 DM necessitate the development of new management and treatment methods for this contingent of patients. Due to the possible teratogenic activity of oral glucose-lowering agents, women with type 2 DM who take the latter must plan their pregnancy.
