The most important criterion that determines the choice of a drug for the treatment of vulvovaginal candidiasis is the spectrum of its action that must involve isolated fungi. If the etiology of vulvovaginal candidiasis is ascertained, the choice of a drug is determined by the species of a fungus. If its etiology is unknown for some reasons or a few fungal species are isolated, a maximally broad-spectrum drug that is also active against different species of yeastlike fungi, such as itraconazole, should be prescribed.
