The pattern of fetal renal artery blood flow was studied in 61 patients having monochorial twin pregnancy (122 fetuses) to evaluate the fetal status in varying degrees of fetofetal transfusion syndrome (FFTS). A donor fetus with severe FFTS was shown to have a higher pulsation index and a lower maximum systolic blood flow velocity in the renal arteries than a fetus without FFTS. A recipient fetus with severe FFTS showed no changes in the pulsation index and maximum systolic flood flow velocity in the renal artery. Measurement of the pulsation index and maximum systolic blood flow velocity in the renal artery may be an additional criterion for evaluating the status of a donor fetus.
