Inverted papilloma is characterized by a high risk of continued growth in non-radical removal, as well as by a tendency to malignant transformation. Modern diagnostic method, such as endoscopy of nasal cavity and nasopharynx, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, allow to establish diagnosis at the prehospital stage with a high degree of confidence and to identify proper area of the neoplasm growth facilitating its total removal.

OBJECTIVE

To improve the diagnosis of inverted papilloma of sinonasal localization.

PATIENTS AND METHODS

An analysis of 114 clinical cases of treatment of patients with inverted papilloma (mean age 55.6±2.95 years) is presented. All patients underwent a video endoscopic examination of the nasal cavity, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging of paranasal sinuses during the diagnostic phase.

RESULTS

Low informative value of video endoscopic method in diagnosis of inverted papilloma was found. The signs specific for inverted papilloma were revealed in most clinical cases, when performing computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, that demonstrates high value of radiological examination methods in the choice of surgical treatment tactics.

CONCLUSION

The symptoms of cone-shaped, ovoid-like hyperostosis, detected by computed tomography, convoluted cerebriform pattern — by magnetic resonance imaging of the paranasal sinuses, are characteristic features of inverted papilloma of sinonasal localization, that should be considered at the differential diagnostic stage.
