The vaginal microbiota is the first line of defense against pathogens of the reproductive tract. Any changes in the normal composition of the microbiome cause a violation of the «microbiological homeostasis» of the vaginal environment, making the woman susceptible to infections of the genital tract. The microbiota of the lower parts of the reproductive organs is affected by the ratio of estrogens and progestins, which is expressed in a dynamic change in its composition during various phases of the menstrual cycle, as well as when using hormonal contraceptives that meet the needs for efficiency and safety. One of the modern methods of hormonal contraception is the vaginal system containing ethinylestradiol and progestin etonogestrel. It is proved that the hormonal components of the vaginal releasing system realize its protective functions, contribute to the dominance and adhesion of lactobacilli to the vaginal ring itself, and compete with the opportunistic flora of the vagina. It is likely that reducing the risk of dysbiotic conditions can be considered as a method of preventing the incidence of STIs.
