BACKGROUND

Rupture of liver’s hydatid cyst is a common complication and leads to massive dissemination of scolexes with the subsequent new cysts appearance that are required repeated surgical treatment. Although this complication is not uncommon, there are few publications summarizing the results of management disseminated echinococcosis of the abdominal cavity, and some of issues regarding the choice of scope and tactics of surgical treatment remain unresolved.

OBJECTIVE

Case presentation of successful surgical treatment of a patient with disseminated echinococcosis of the abdominal cavity.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

In the presented clinical case, a 70-year-old female due to a rupture of a liver’s echinococcal cyst had dissemination of the abdominal cavity by subsequent appearance of new cysts requiring five-staged surgical intervention. Echinococcectomy from abdominal cavity was performed at different periods within 30 years from time of cyst rupture. Adequate preoperative preparation, echinococcectomy without opening of chitin layer (ideal) from the abdominal cavity and small pelvis, as well as prolonged chemotherapy with albendazole, made it possible to achieve immediate and medium-term good results without recurrence of the disease.

CONCLUSION

Rupture of an hydatid cyst is a common complication and leads to massive dissemination of scolexes with subsequent appearance of new echinococcal cysts that require repeated surgical treatment. Ideal echinococcectomy with prolonged chemotherapy allows to increase the duration of the relapse-free time of disease.
