To evaluate the long-term outcomes of laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair.
A retrospective cohort study included patients after laparoscopic elective inguinal hernia repair in 2019. Telephone survey of patients was conducted in 2023 to assess the incidence of recurrence and chronic pain. All patients with any complaints were invited for clinical examination and ultrasound of inguinal area.
Among 651 patients after inguinal hernia repair, 474 (72.8%) ones underwent laparoscopic surgery. Chronic pain was observed in 41 (11.1%) patients, recurrences — in 9 (2.5%) patients as evidenced by clinical examination and ultrasound data.
Recurrence and especially chronic pain after laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair are still a significant problem. According to our data, incidence of recurrences and chronic pain syndrome remains high. This fact confirms the importance of this problem and the need to look for new solutions.
