OBJECTIVE

To compare the outcomes of median sternotomy and right-sided thoracotomy in cardiac surgery.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

A retrospective observational study included 28 patients (20 women and 8 men) aged 49.9±13.5 years who underwent correction of various cardiac diseases. All patients were retrospectively divided into 2 groups depending on surgical approach: group 1 — right-sided thoracotomy, group 2 — median sternotomy.

RESULTS

Complication rate and in-hospital mortality were similar in both groups. Thoracotomy was accompanied by more intense pain syndrome in postoperative period and better cosmetic outcome.

CONCLUSION

Considering no need for additional resources (robotic console, endoscopic equipment, manipulators, special instruments and additional consumables), anterolateral thoracotomy is a compromise option between conventional sternotomy and minimally invasive approaches.
