OBJECTIVE

To assess postoperative outcomes in patients with acute lower limb ischemia stage IIa-IIc.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

A retrospective analysis included 141 patients with acute lower limb ischemia stage IIa-IIc for the period from 2016 to 2018. Mean age was 72.7±14.6 years. The outcomes were estimated depending on severity and level of ischemia.

RESULTS

The most common complications in these patients were renal dysfunction (n=69, 48.9%), cardiovascular failure (n=30, 21.3%), respiratory failure (n=28, 19.9%). Multiple organ failure was diagnosed in 9 (6.4%) patients. Secondary amputation of the lower limb was performed in 15 (10.6%) patients; postoperative mortality was 13.5% (n=19). Ischemia stage IIc was characterized by a large number of organ dysfunctions, mortality after surgery was comparable. Aorto-femoral occlusions were followed by 2 times higher mortality compared to distal occlusions.

CONCLUSION

Incidence of complications is increased in case of acute lower limb ischemia followed by severe limb edema (stage IIc). Mortality rate depends on the level of occlusion.
