Phlebectomy in the greater saphenous vein system (stripping + miniphlebectomy + dissection of perforating veins) was performed in 36 patients presenting with primary varicosis (CEAP clinical class C2). They were divided into two groups of which group 1 comprised 15 patients treated with a microionized purified flavonoid fraction (two tablets daily) during 1 months prior to surgery and 2 weeks after it. Group 2 (control) included 21 patients given no phleboprotectors either before or after surgery. The size of subcutaneous hemorrhage areas at a thigh and lower leg was measured on days 1, 7, and 14 after surgery. The severity of pain syndrome was estimated using a 5-point visual-analog scale during the first 3 days and further on days 7 and 14. The preventive treatment with a micronized purified flavonoid fraction was shown to appreciably reduce the severity of pain syndrome compared with control. The size of subcutaneous hemorrhage areas was also much smaller and their regression rate was higher than in the untreated patients. However, these differences were not statistically significant, probably because of the small number of observations.
