Maternal-fetal transplacental transmission of IgG antibodies to measles virus favors the protection of a baby during the first year of life. However, maternal IgG antibody transmission depends on many factors. Objective: to estimate the umbilical cord blood levels of IgG antibodies to measles virus in relation to the course to the fetus pregnancy. Material and methods. The hospital records of 155 parturients whose pregnancy was complicated by threatened miscarriage, preeclampsia, or fetoplacental insufficiency (FPI), 43 patients diagnosed as having intrauterine infection (IUI) or neonatal IUI, and 119 women who had a normal pregnancy and had given birth to healthy babies were analyzed in detail. According to instructions, the standard reagent kit was used for enzyme immunoassay of immunoglobulin G antibodies to measles virus in umbilical cord serum. Results. There was the largest number (89.1%) of seropositive (0.18 IU/ml) results in the group of women with normal pregnancy and that of seronegative (<0.18 IU/ml) ones in the groups of women with FPI (72.1%) and IUI (67.4%). At the same time, the mean antibody levels were lower in the women with FPI (1.05±0.17 IU/ml; p<0.05) or in those with IUI (0.73±0.19 IU/ml; p<0.01) whereas it was 1.31±0.14 IU/ml in the women with normal pregnancy. Conclusion. Thus, fetoplacental unit pathology and IUI decrease maternal-fetal transplacental transmission of specific IgG antibodies to measles virus, which is a high risk factor for this infection in infants and determines the need for an individual approach to vaccinating this contingent of children.
