To predict the progression of the epidemiological situation and plan measures for the specific and non-specific prevention of COVID-19, studies of herd immunity to SARS-CoV-2 are necessary. According to the literature, the threshold level of herd immunity necessary for the extinction of some infections is 60-70%.

OBJECTIVE

To determine the level and structure of herd immunity to SARS-CoV-2 in the older age group during the universal vaccination against COVID-19.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

The study was performed in the Department of Biomedical Research and Technology of the Research Center of the Irkutsk Scientific Center of Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (ISC SB RAS). The study protocol included 192 people who are employees of ISC SB RAS, including 64 people of the older age group (65+). The age of the subjects varied from 20 to 87 years.

RESULTS

The highest rates of herd immunity to the SARS-CoV-2 among the studied personnel of the ISC SB RAS were 77%. The highest level of seroprevalence of 83.5% was detected in subjects of the age group of 60-80 years. No SARS-CoV-2 IgM antibodies were detected in the study subjects after vaccination against the new coronavirus infection. In a comparative study of specific IgG antibodies, no statistically significant differences were found between vaccinated subjects and those with a history of COVID-19.

CONCLUSION

Further studies, monitoring, and control of antibody levels are needed to determine the optimal timeframe for booster vaccination or the development of an immunorehabilitation program for COVID-19 survivors.
