For a long time serum ferritin has been known not only as a marker of iron status, but also as a marker of inflammation. However, the pandemic of coronavirus disease forced to look at this laboratory parameter in a new way and widely use it in clinical practice as one of the key marker for assessing the severity of patients with COVID-19. This review presents the results of studies and meta-analyses that show the diagnostic value of serum ferritin as a marker of hyperinflammation, as well as its predictive value in assessing the course and outcomes of COVID-19. Possible mechanisms of its increase in severe disease are considered.
