Interest in geriatrics, including dermatological practice, is growing along with the increase in life expectancy. Therapy selection shall consider possible concomitant diseases and various skin changes associated with aging. During aging, the skin loses its strength and elasticity through degradation of collagen fibers. Structural and functional changes in the epidermis and dermis lead to a decrease in lipid and moisture content, manifested by xerosis, and is accompanied by itching. Older people often suffer from itching, which can occur due to xerosis and accompany several somatic pathologies. Age-related skin changes elevate the risk for the development of certain dermatoses. Older people often suffer from eczema of varied etiology, including nummular eczema. This group of patients is also susceptible to allergic dermatitis due to increased skin barrier permeability. Age-related immune system changes can, at times, cause atopic dermatitis. Moisturizers are indicated in all these conditions. Chronic inflammatory dermatoses can also impact aging-related diseases, like obesity, diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular diseases, and dementia. There is evidence that treating skin inflammation improves the course of these comorbidities. This data and the positive effect of moisturizers on older people’s quality of life highlight the importance of adequate skin hydration at that age, regardless of dermatological pathology.
