Skin itching has inseparably accompanied mankind since the beginning of its existence. Historically, however, the pruritus has increasingly been seen as a condition peculiar to disadvantaged populations or stemming from inadequate personal or social hygiene, even despite the contributions that leading physicians have made to the study of the condition at various times. The article deals with the history of this condition, references of pruritus in historical texts, and discoveries associated with it. A great deal of socio-educational work needs to be done before patients with pruritus of various localizations and etiologies stop being stigmatized by society. Thus, many patients still suffer from pruritus in the intimate areas (in the anus and/or genitals), consider it shameful or taboo to talk about it, and delay seeking medical assistance as long as possible. Based on the current experience, physicians can administer etiopathogenetic treatment and successfully manage even with treatment-resistant cases.
