Compression therapy is effective for eliminating venous symptoms in patients with chronic venous disease (CVD).

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate the effect of 18—21 mm Hg universal size compression knee socks on venous symptoms in patients with CVD.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

A multiple-center, open, randomized controlled trial included 140 patients over 18 years old with CVD C2S-C3S. All ones were divided into 2 equal groups: the main group — compression therapy for 30 days; the control group — no compression therapy. The study was registered in the Register of Chronic Vein Diseases of the Association of Phlebologists (ID RRT_CVD 1.017). The study was designed in accordance with the CONSORT standards.

RESULTS

There was significant relief or complete regression of venous symptoms in the main group. The medians of symptom severity at the 1^st and 2^nd visits (before and after treatment) in the main group were as follows: pain — 1.8 [1.4; 2.4] and 0.4 [0.2; 0.6]; compression — 1.9 [1.4; 2.4] and 0.4 [0.0; 0.8]; severity — 2.4 [1.4; 3.1] and 0.6 [0.0; 1.0]; fatigue — 2.5 [1.7; 3.5] and 0.8 [0.3; 1.3]; sensation of swelling — 1.7 [0.8; 2.2] and 0.0 [0.0; 0.0]; feeling of restlessness in legs — 2.1 [1.4; 2.9] and 0.6 [0.1; 1.3], sum of symptoms — 13.15 [9.4; 16.9] and 3.3 [1.9; 4.8] points, respectively. There was high adherence to the recommendation of wearing compression stockings for 3 weeks followed by decrease of this value. All patients noted the ease of application of compression socks.

CONCLUSION

Universal size 18—21 mm Hg compression socks are effective for eliminating venous symptoms in patients with symptomatic CVD.
