Abstract:

OBJECTIVE

To study the effectiveness of surgical prevention of thromboembolic complications in patients with superficial vein thrombosis and phlebitis on the thigh in routine clinical practice.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

A retrospective study included 416 patients hospitalized for superficial vein thrombosis and phlebitis of the lower extremities. We analyzed medical records of patients with above-the-knee venous thrombosis and phlebitis who underwent surgical prevention of venous thromboembolism. Duration of superficial vein thrombosis and phlebitis, clinical and ultrasound data on localization and extent of these processes were assessed.

RESULTS

There were 149 (35.8%) men and 267 (64.2%) women. Patients appealed for medical care in subacute period of disease in 279 (67.1%) cases, in acute period — in 137 (32.9%) cases. Crossectomy was performed in 224 (53.8%) patients, thrombectomy from saphenofemoral junction and common femoral vein with subsequent crossectomy — in 46 (11.1%) patients, crossectomy and phlebocentesis — in 146 (35.1%) cases. In-hospital complications occurred in 6 (1.4%) patients. In one (0.2%) case, deep vein thrombosis of the contralateral lower limb was registered. Five (1.2%) patients had local postoperative infiltration and lymphorrhea. There were no hemorrhagic complications, lethal outcomes and pulmonary embolism. In 103 (24.7%) patients, elective phlebectomy was subsequently performed.

CONCLUSION

Surgical prevention of deep vein thrombosis in patients with superficial vein thrombosis and phlebitis ensures a favorable course of disease. This procedure is also accompanied by small incidence of postoperative complications.
