A total of 135 patients (47 men and 88 women) aged from 17 to 88 (mean 43) years were examined. They applied for angiological aid with complaints of swelling of the lower extremities that they attributed to varicosis. The following variants of pathology that caused, alone or in combination, limb swelling were revealed during the comprehensive examination: secondary lymphedema associated with primary varicosis, flatfoot, ankle joint arthrosis with and without flatfoot. It was shown that swelling of the distal parts of the lower extremities is not a typical syndrome of uncomplicated primary varicosis. In contrast, such swelling in the patients with varicosis after exclusion of primary lymphedema, foot and ankle joint pathology (including cases of trophic changes in subcutaneous fat of the crural region, open and closed ulcers) should be used as an argument in favour of the search for deep vein thrombosis in the preceding period.
