Interleukin-10 levels in patients with alcoholic liver disease

OBJECTIVE

To measure interleukin-10 levels in patients with alcoholic liver disease.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

It is a case-control study of diagnostic method. 18 patients with chronic alcoholic hepatitis, 41 patients with alcoholic cirrhosis, and 15 healthy individuals (control group) were included.

RESULTS

IL-10 levels in patients with liver cirrhosis were higher than in the control group (3.15; 0.37—9.2 pg/mml vs. 0; 0—2.7 pg/mml, p=0.01). IL-10 levels did not differ statistically (p>0.05) between patients with chronic hepatitis and the control group, as well as between patients with liver cirrhosis and patients with chronic hepatitis. The level of interleukin-10 was higher in patients with Child-Puge cirrhosis classes B and C (3.15; 1.76—8.24 pg/mml and 6.16; 0.37—12.4 pg/mml, respectively) than in patients with Child-Puge A cirrhosis (0.37; 0—0.83 pg/ml, p<0.05). IL-10 levels were higher in individuals with cirrhosis classes B and C than they were in those with chronic hepatitis and cirrhosis class A (p<0.05). Average strong correlations between the levels of IL-10 and Fib4 (r=0.54), APRI (r=0.58), Forns (r=0.64), hemoglobin (r= –0.63), platelets (r= –0.63), lymphocytes (r= –0.52), segmented neutrophils (r=0.47), PTI (r= –0.59), and APTT (r=0.37) were found in patients with cirrhosis.

CONCLUSION

Interleukin-10 is a crucial anti-inflammatory cytokine involved in the development of alcohol-related liver damage due to inflammation and necrosis inhibition, as well as the promotion of regeneration.
