Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) occupies the leading position by prevalence among all functional disorders of the digestive tract. IBS acquires new features on a background of excessive body weight and obesity in the time of metabolic syndrome pandemic. This review has been prepared to analyze the features of IBS in overweight and obese individuals. The literature was searched in Embase, PubMed, and Google Scholar using the keywords: irritable bowel syndrome, overweight, obesity, body mass index, visceral fat, mechanisms.
