Abstract:

Aim. The objective of the present study was the evaluation of the potential of laparoscopic technologies for the treatment of the patients presenting with rectal cancer. Material and methods. The study included two groups of the patients with rectal cancer. One of them was comprised of the patients at the age of 60 years and above that (n=56)) while the other group was composed of the patients below 60 years of age (n=48). The surgical interventions were performed with the use of a video-endoscopic technique (54 patients) or by the traditional approaches (50 patients). Results. The article reports good results of the surgical treatment of the older-age patients presenting with rectal cancer obtained with the use of both the traditional surgical technique and laparoscopy. The authors present the analysis of the causes behind the complications and the conversion of the access during the laparoscopic interventions. Conclusion. The article provides evidence of the high effectiveness and safety of the methods used in the present study for the treatment of the patients of elderly and senile age suffering from rectal cancer.
