OBJECTIVE

To systematize the data on efficacy and safety of parenteral L-lysine aescinate in patients with back pain.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

We reviewed English- and Russian-language databases using appropriate keywords and found 26 articles devoted to L-lysine aescinate therapy in various diseases accompanied by back pain. Final analysis included 19 clinical trials involving 1.563 patients with back pain. There were 8 randomized controlled trials and other non-randomized open-label controlled trials in parallel groups. In all studies, patients in the main groups received parenteral L-lysine aescinate 5—10 ml for 5—14 days. In the control groups, there was therapy based on medical standards and clinical recommendations for back pain management. Various questionnaires and scales were used to assess pain syndrome. Some studies used several scales simultaneously to increase objectification in pain assessment.

RESULTS

Objectifying diagnostic methods (electroneuromyography, Doppler ultrasound) confirmed the positive effect of L-lysine aescinate on back pain pathogenesis (ischemia, edema, reflex muscle spasm). In all studies, we observed faster and more stable pain relief, as well as restoration of motor activity after L-lysine aescinate therapy compared to the control group. High safety of L-lysine aescinate without serious adverse events was also noted.

CONCLUSION

It is advisable to introduce parenteral L-lysine aescinate into clinical guidelines for dorsopathy, dorsalgia and back pain management.
