To analyze the effectiveness, limitations and available evidence base of conservative methods for avascular necrosis of the femoral head.
A systematic searching was performed in the PubMed, Scopus and Google Scholar databases between January 2020 and August 2023. Eligible manuscripts, including original studies, case reports and reviews were examined for relevant well-documented outcomes after conservative treatment. Non-English language articles and articles on surgical treatment without data on conservative methods were excluded. We found 376 manuscripts on avascular necrosis of the femoral head in multiple databases. After deduplication and careful selection, we enrolled 11 full-text articles.
The effectiveness of conservative methods, such as pharmacological interventions and physiotherapy procedures, in the treatment of avascular necrosis of the femoral head was assessed. A better understanding of pathophysiology of avascular necrosis of the femoral head and advances in diagnostic capabilities have revived interest in non-surgical interventions with emphasis on personalized, multidisciplinary approaches to improve the outcomes.
Despite promising results in symptom relief and disease progression, data variability and methodological limitations highlight the need for further rigorous randomized controlled trials to establish a robust, patient-centered approach to optimize therapeutic options for the treatment of avascular necrosis.
