Preeclampsia, manifested as new-onset arterial hypertension and proteinuria in the third trimester, can rapidly progress to serious complications, including death of both the mother and the fetus. Although the cause of preeclampsia is still debated, it can be assumed that the placenta plays a central role in the pathogenesis of this syndrome. The role of abnormal placentation and the involvement of placental factors in the pathogenesis of preeclampsia are discussed. The pre-sented biomarkers can be used for the prognosis and confirmation of the severity of preeclampsia.
