Abstract:

A prospective cohort study of the course and outcome of pregnancy was conducted in 169 women with overweight and first-degree obesity recognized before pregnancy. A control group comprised 90 women with normal pregravid weight. The overweight and obese women showed a high frequency of not only early, but also late pregnancy complications and more commonly developed carbohydrate metabolic disturbances. Their babies' birth weight was higher and 1-minute Apgar score was below the normal values. Measures to reduce weight in overweight and obese women planning pregnancy should be elaborated and introduced.
