The objective of the present study was to elucidate the specific features of caries pathogenesis in the oil-industry workers in the northern part of the Tomsk region. Material and methods. We studied the prevalence and severity of dental caries (DMF index) in 106 subjects at the age from 35-44 years who have been living in the northern part of the Tomsk region during a long period. The patients were divided into two groups. The main group was comprised of oil-industry workers (n=48) exposed to the abusive working conditions while the group of comparison (n=58) included the employees who worked under normal conditions. The biochemical and immunological characteristics were determined in the fluid obtained from the oral cavity of the patients of both groups. Results. The study revealed disorders of the mineral homeostasis in the oral cavity, the impairment of the general antioxidative capacity, enhancement of the oxidative activity, and changes in the immune characteristics of the oral cavity in the oil-industry workers exposed to the unfavourable environmental and production conditions of the northern part of the Tomsk region. These data should be taken into consideration in the elaboration of the primary prophylactic measures aimed at the prevention of dental caries in the oil-industry workers under conditions of the northern part of the Tomsk region.
