Abstract:

Aim of examination: to study the dynamic of olfactory function in patients with polyposal rhinosinusitis (PRS) after treatment with budesonid-spray. Material and methods: 15 patients with 1-2 stage of PRS in the age 22-75 years old were included in examination. Patients who underwent previously surgical removing of polyps were excluded. Six patients had PRS associated with bronchial asthma. Olfactory function was studied with 10-point visual analog scale and Sniffin' Sticks test. Intranasal spray budesonid 400 mkg/day was administered in all cases. Measurements of olfaction were carried out before the treatment (visit 0), 1 month (visit 1) and 8-10 months (visit 2) after the beginning of treatment. Results: all patients had anosmia before the beginning of the treatment. During the first visit nobody had normal olfactory function, and six patients had hyposmia. All parameters of olfactory function improved significantly (olfactory threshold p = 0,046, olfactory discrimination p = 0,041, olfactory identification p = 0,005, TDI-index p = 0,003). However, during the second visit olfactory identification and TDI-index went down significantly (p = 0,009 and 0,029 respectively). Olfactory threshold and olfactory discrimination didn't change significantly. Five patients from 15 needed surgical removing of polyps. Conclusion. As a result of using budesonid olfactory function improves. However at a later stage this function deteriorates, remaining reliably higher than the original indicators. Regress of olfaction can be estimated as sign of progression of PRS. Administration of intranasal budesonid
