Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) remains the leading cause of disability and mortality in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2). CVD have multifactorial nature, but no single risk factor helps to distinguish persons, who will develop cardiovascular event, from those who will not. Doctors need tools which will help them to inform patients with DM2 about the risk of serious complications (myocardial infarction and cerebral stroke) development and initiate appropriate preventative measures (pharmacological and non-drug). This review of literature presents the main computerized algorithms, numerical and graphical tables which are developed to estimate 10-year cardiovascular risk in persons with DM2 (without CVD history), resulting from a number of international epidemiological prospective studies, which were held in Russia as well. The relevance of validation of existing scales for the Russian population was noted. Cardiovascular risk assessment in persons with DM2 is simple, rapid and non-invasive.
