Abstract:

The rate of malnutrition among cancer patients is as high as 40—80%. It is one of the main complications of the oncological process. Malnutrition leads to poorer immediate and late treatment results, worse quality of life in patients, and an inability to implement combined and complex treatment protocols. Nutrition support should be considered as a mandatory component of supportive therapy in cancer patients, which is particularly relevant for a tumor in the upper gastrointestinal tract. The paper gives the data available in the literature on malnutrition and its consequences in patients with malignant tumors of the esophagus and stomach. It discusses indications and methods for nutrition support at different stages of surgical and combined treatments, as well as nutrition support therapy protocols in patients with gastric and esophageal cancer, which are used at the P.A. Herzen Moscow Oncology Research Institute.
