Abstract:

Objective: to define diagnostic cytological and immunocytochemical criteria for Hodgkin’s lymphoma and its variants. Subjects and methods. Cytohistological comparisons were made in 125 patients with a morphological (cytological or histological) diagnosis of Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Routine BD SurePath (Becton Dickinson) liquid-based cytological agents were used. Immunomorphological (immunocytochemical and immunohistochemical) studies were conducted using the Ultra Vision, EnVision FLEX methods. Results. The routine cytological examination allows the diagnosis of Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 92.8% of cases. Immunocytochemistry improves cytological diagnosis and can make a diagnosis of Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 98.4%. The cytohistological comparisons made it possible to elaborate the cytological signs of different variants of Hodgkin’s lymphoma; in this case the morphology of Hodgkin’s and Berezovsky—Sternberg tumor cells and the composition of the reactive background were taken into account. Clinical data, namely age, gender, the course of disease, and the site of involvement, are of great importance in determining the variant of Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Conclusion. Immunocytochemistry enables one not only to determine different variants of Hodgkin’s lymphoma, but also to make a differential diagnosis between the latter and anaplastic large cell lymphoma and diffuse large B-cell lymphoma.
