Objective: to study metabolic complications of androgen deprivation therapy (ADT), such as obesity, insulin resistance, and lipid changes, as well as the association of ADT with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM-2) and cardiovascular diseases. Subjects and methods. Two continuous ADT regimens (luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone agonist monotherapy and maximum androgen blockade (MAB)) were performed in patients with prostate cancer for 6 months. Metabolic disturbances inherent in classical metabolic syndrome and the effects of ADT were identified. Results. There were increases in the Quetle index, the risk of obesity, total cholesterol, and fasting blood glucose levels with a risk for DM-2, a considerable rise in “good” lipoprotein cholesterol, and an increase in body weight due to subcutaneous rather than visceral fat. The above negative symptoms were ascertained to have no negative impact on systolic blood pressure (BP) and a slight impact on diastolic BP. Conclusion. All metabolic disturbances were somewhat higher in the MAB group than in the buserelin monotherapy group. Metabolic processes in ADT greatly differed from classical metabolic syndrome.
