BACKGROUND

Skin microbiocenosis in patients with acne is characterized by a high microbial burden with numerous taxonomic groups, species diversity, and abundant microorganisms with a predominance of symbiotic-associated strains.

OBJECTIVE

To study gels for topical use using reference and clinical strains of bacteria and fungi commonly cultured from the skin of patients with acne.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

The antimicrobial activity of the following agents was evaluated using the agar diffusion method: 0.1% Adapalene + 1% Metronidazole (1), 0.1% Adapalene (2), 2.5% Benzoyl peroxide + 0.1% Adapalene (3), 0.1% Adapalene + 1% Clindamycin (4). Reference and clinical strains of bacteria Staphylococcus aureus, Cutibacterium acnes, Klebsiella oxytoca, and fungi Candida albicans and Rhodotorula mucilaginosa were used as test microorganisms. The activity of the agents was evaluated by the size of the inhibition zone.

RESULTS

Gel 1, 0.1% containing Adapalene + Metronidazole 1%, showed bacteriostatic and fungistatic effects against all microorganisms tested. Against Cutibacterium acnes, it showed moderate activity. Gel 2, containing Adapalene 0.1%, showed no antimicrobial activity against all microorganisms. Gels 3 and 4 were active against the gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus and Cutibacterium acnes and had no fungicidal effect on yeasts.

CONCLUSION

A topical combination containing Adapalene 0.1% + Metronidazole 1% showed broad-spectrum antimicrobial effects against bacteria and fungi.
