OBJECTIVE

Assessment of the surgical activity of pediatric surgeons and oncologists in the treatment of skin neoplasms in children.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

The data of the pathological department archive of the Nizhny Novgorod Regional Children’s Clinical Hospital from 2007 to 2016 were studied.

RESULTS

The 7945 pathological findings were analyzed where 5879 (74%) findings are the results of pathomorphological examination of non-melanocytic and 2066 (26%) findings are melanocytic neoplasms. It was established that over 10 years in the Nizhny Novgorod Regional Children’s Clinical Hospital the 7945 unjustified excisional biopsies were performed so, not a single malignant neoplasm of the skin was detected.

CONCLUSION

The results obtained indicate that in childhood, surgical treatment should not be the first line of therapy for skin neoplasms, in particular nevi. Counseling a child with a skin neoplasm should be multidisciplinary and begin with a consultation with a dermatovenerologist with dermatoscopy skills. The doctor should discuss the any skin neoplasm tactics in a child with parents who need to be explained all the potential risks and benefits of various treatment methods.
