ABSTRACT Currently, the prevalence of herpes virus infection is extremely high and quite often it is associated with the presence of various members of the Herpesviridae family in the body. However, clinicians are not well informed about correct interpretation of laboratory tests, assessment of immune status parameters, and choice of etiopathogenetic therapy, depending on the severity of the disease and the stage of the viral process. Analysis of approaches to the choice of treatment of patients suggests that clinicians still often prescribe treatment empirically, which leads to the development of complications or worsens the severity of infection. The situation is complicated by the fact that some groups of pharmaceuticals are not used to treat herpetic infections and their use is not standardized. Experience of Russian specialists is based on scarce clinical studies carried out according to different protocols, which complicates their synthesis and evaluation of clinical efficacy and safety. This article is aimed at discussing the possibility of using immunomodulators and interferon inducers in the treatment of herpes virus infections and the place of this therapy. We suggested pathogenetically substantiated niches of immune therapy for herpes viruses as one of the methods of secondary prevention of disease recurrence based on our own clinical experience and long-term research in the field of immunity disorders in various variants of herpes simplex, as well as data from other authors
