Macroscopic studies of both native and stained preparations are extensively used in microbiological surveys despite the low sensitivity of this method. The objective of the present work was to develop a method for the detection of Trichomonas vaginalis with the use of fluorescence-labeled antibodies against lysates of T. vaginalis cells and adhesive protein AP65. Sensitivity of the direct immunofluorescence technique for the identification of T. vaginalis was estimated in a model experiment and compared with that of other methods available for diagnostics of trichomoniasis. It was shown that the direct immunofluorescence technique can be used to detect T.vaginalis in the initial material containing at least 1000 trichomonad cells. We recommend that the direct immunofluorescence technique should be employed for the identification of immobile cells morphologically similar to T.vaginalis cells in a medium.
