Abstract:

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate the effectiveness of subtotal colectomy for slow-transit constipation.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

A retrospective analysis included 11 patients who underwent subtotal colectomy for slow-transit constipation between 2022 and 2024. Quality of life was assessed using the international Gastrointestinal Quality of Life Index (GIQLI) questionnaire before surgery, 2 weeks and 2 months postoperatively.

RESULTS

We revealed significantly better QoL across all GIQLI items in 2 weeks and 2 months after subtotal colectomy (p< 0.05). Mean total GIQLI score increased by 25.4% after 2 weeks and 28.4% after 2 months compared to preoperative values. All patients reported complete regression or significant reduction of pain, as well as overall improvement in well-being. Four (36.4%) patients rated their quality of life as excellent, while 7 (63.6%) ones described it as good.

CONCLUSION

We observed significantly better QoL in patients with slow-transit constipation after subtotal colectomy.
