Abstract:

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate the management, short-term and long-term outcomes in elderly patients with atrial fibrillation (AF).

MATERIAL AND METHODS

A retrospective/prospective study included 234 patients with non-valvular AF for the period from August 2015 to April 2016. The authors analyze the influence of various factors on mortality throughout a 3-year follow-up period.

RESULTS

Long-term outcomes in elderly patients with AF were influenced by age, concomitant cardiovascular diseases (exertional angina, postinfarction cardiac sclerosis and chronic heart failure), changes in intracardiac hemodynamics and dimensions of cardiac cavities (left atrium enlargement), severe chronic kidney disease, as well as appointment of the drugs associated with more severe course of disease (diuretics and digoxin).
