Abstract:

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate the association of AB0 blood group and deep vein thrombosis in elderly and senile patients considering gender and age categories.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

There were 55 patients over 60 years old with objectively confirmed deep vein thrombosis of the lower extremities. AB0 blood group was investigated in all cases. The control group consisted of 49 patients without previous deep vein thrombosis. All patients were divided into two groups according to the WHO age classification: elderly (60-74 years old) and senile ones (75-90 years old).

RESULTS

In elderly and senile patients with DVT, blood group B was 3 times more common than in patients of the control group (34.5% vs. 12.2%, respectively; OR=3.8; 95% CI 1.4-10.5; p=0.008). Moreover, blood group B was more common in women with DVT compared to men with DVT and the control group (OR=3.1; 95% CI 1.0-10.0; p=0.05 and OR=13.0; 95% CI 2.5-68.6; p<0.001, respectively). In general, blood group non-0 was 4.5 times more common in DVT patients (83.6% vs. 16.4%, respectively; OR=4.5; 95% CI 1.8-11.2; p<0.001) and 1.5 times more common than in the control group (83.6% vs. 53.0%, respectively).

CONCLUSION

Non-0 blood groups may be an additional risk factor of DVT in elderly and senile patients.
