OBJECTIVE

To study the quality of life (QoL) in patients with secondary lymphedema of the lower extremities after different treatment strategies.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

The study included 90 patients aged 31-85 years who were divided into 3 groups of 30 patients each. QoL was assessed using SF-36 questionnaire. The 1^st and 2^nd groups consisted of patients with stage II secondary lymphedema of the lower extremities. In the 1^st group, venoactive drug and compression therapy were administered. Compression therapy alone was applied in the 2^nd group. The 3^rd group (control) included people without venous and lymphatic diseases. QoL was evaluated before treatment and 3 months later using SF-36 questionnaire.

RESULTS

Patients with secondary lymphedema of the lower extremities presented with significantly less scores of physical functioning (PF), role physical functioning (RP), bodily pain (BP), general health (GH), vitality (VT) and mental health (MH) compared to healthy volunteers. Combination of venoactive drug and compression therapy had a significant advantage over elastic compression alone regarding 6 SF-36 scales. The use of elastic compression alone did not significantly improve QoL.

CONCLUSION

Patients with lower limb lymphedema have a lower quality of life in comparison with healthy volunteers. Combination of venoactive drug and compression therapy significantly improved quality of life in patients with secondary lymphedema according to SF-36 questionnaire.
