The objective of the present work was to evaluate the efficiency of combined therapy using the micronized purified flavonoid fraction during the early period after endovenous laser obliteration (EVLO) in patients presenting with primary varicosis. This randomized open prospective study compared two groups of patients after crossectomy with retrograde ENLO of the saphenous trunk. Patients of group 1 (controls) used class II elastic compression hosiery in the postoperative period. In group 2, this treatment was supplemented by the use of the micronized purified flavonoid fraction (1000 mg daily for 60 days). The objective assessment of treatment efficiency was based on the measurement of calf superficial and core temperature. In addition, the influence of phlebotropic treatment on the quality of life was evaluated using the MOS SF-36 questionnaire. It was shown that patients comprising group 2 more frequently than controls showed normal temperature of calf soft tissues lying close to the obliterated veins. Also, they reported a higher degree of pain alleviation and better general physical well-being than patients in group 1. It is concluded that the use of the micronized purified flavonoid fraction accelerates the repair of inflammation-induced changes in the soft tissues of the calf following laser coagulation and thereby improves the quality of life in these patients.
