Opioid peptides in the regulation of eating behavior and appetite. (A Narrative Review)

OBJECTIVE

Illuminate the involvement of opioid system peptides in governing eating behavior (EB) and appetite.

KEY POINTS

Insights from various experimental studies suggest that endogenous opioid peptides play a pivotal role in regulating fundamental aspects of the digestive process — EB and appetite. Special focus is placed on endogenous peptides (endorphins and enkephalins), exploring their physiological and pharmacological effects, and their potential impact on diverse pathological conditions and diseases, such as obesity and metabolic disorders. The potential development of novel medicinal products based on synthetic opioid peptides is under consideration.

CONCLUSIONS

Opioid system peptides (enkephalins, endorphins) are vital contributors to the regulation of EB and appetite, offering corrective avenues for disruptions in the feeding process. The exploration of neuropeptides’ and the opioid system’s roles in governing digestion, appetite, and EB should persist and be encouraged, leveraging the capabilities of modern biochemistry and pharmacology to develop innovative medications rooted in opioid peptides.
